The main purpose of his book was to make Japanese culture acceptable to and valued by the West and in particular Philadelphia at the beginning of the 20th century, but he also had to assure the approval of the imperial authorities. Bushido was a valiant attempt to “translate” the ethical code of the samurais for the West, but perhaps in so doing Nitobe idealized the samurai caste by domesticating their values and teaching in order to bring them closer to Christian values and teaching. Nitobe was descended from one of the great samurai families, but he converted to Christianity, married an American Quaker from Philadelphia and studied widely in the US and in Europe. In Bushido, probably the best known of Nitobe’s books, the renowned Japanese writer and diplomat tried to act as an inter-cultural mediator between East and West and export the concepts and values of Bushido (the path of the samurai). This paper looks at self-censorship and censorship in Bushido: The Soul of Japan (1900) by Nitobe, Inazo (1862-1933) as well as in four different translations of the book. ![]()

These results show a nonredundant function of PI3K isoforms downstream of the epidermal growth factor receptor and indicate that the presence of p110δ may confer breast cancer cells with selective migratory capacities. In contrast, p110β was required for the direction but not the speed of migration, whereas p110α did not impact on either of these parameters. ![]() ![]() Isoform-specific neutralization of PI3K isoforms in breast cancer cell lines (by PI3K antibody microinjection or a p110δ-selective pharmacological inhibitor) demonstrated that p110δ is the most important class IA PI3K in the regulation of epidermal growth factor-driven motility in vitro, controlling the directionality and, to a lesser extent, the speed of migration. Originally found in WBCs, p110δ was also detected in some nonhematopoietic cell types especially those of breast or melanocytic origin, both in the untransformed and transformed state. We screened a large panel of tissues and cell lines for expression of class IA PI3Ks, and document a ubiquitous expression of the p110α and p110β isoforms but a variable and more restricted tissue distribution of the p110δ isoform. Despite a clear implication of PI3K in cancer, little is known about the distribution of the different PI3K isoforms in malignant cells. Class IA phosphoinositide 3′-kinases (PI3Ks) regulate many cellular processes downstream of tyrosine kinases and Ras. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More than ten seconds passed before her eyes dropped. When the altar of the god of war is destroyed, “‘Well, Vashanka?’ he tested. There are conversations with gods, and pleas that end up neglected. This is what this story, with Tempus in the lead, is about: “He has ridden at a devil’s pace out of the sanctuary, home to the Stepsons’ barracks, which once had been a slaver’s estate and thus had rooms enough for Tempus to allow his hard-won mercenaries the luxury of piracy.”Īs the immortal commander of the Sacred Band cavalry, Tempus is at once blessed and cursed with his fate: “He lived interminably, though he could not sleep at all… And wounds he took healed quickly - instantly if the god loved him that day, more slowly if they had been quarreling.” Here is a delightfully pagan, mythological world, where gods have caprices just like us, and strife abounds in their realm, which is reflected in ours. The title “Beyond Sanctuary” suggests to me a journey of exploration, setting out of known place, where it is safe to remain ensconced, to risk life and limb in a fight, a brutal war between forces of good and of evil. ![]() ![]() ![]() Un relato tan íntimo como conmovedor sobre amores que lindan con el desamparo, mientras hilan la crónica de un tiempo que nunca fue.
